Yoga benefits article says the holistic regimen leads to bliss, not stupor

If you've taken a Dahn Yoga health class lately, you've probably left your local community center feeling relaxed, refreshed, even dazed.

If you've taken a Dahn Yoga health class lately, you've probably left your local community center feeling relaxed, refreshed, even dazed. This sensation – which many enthusiasts refer to as "blissing out" – has nothing to do with your mental clarity or intelligence level, according to a yoga benefits article in the Boston Herald.

A reader named "Taylor" wrote to the newspaper to describe an anecdote she'd heard from her yoga teacher. The instructor, who freely admitted that yoga occasionally makes one feel dopey or dazed, was once asked if yoga "makes you stupid."

Her response, according to the reader, was a heartfelt "No!" Yoga doesn't make practitioners stupid; instead, it stimulates parts of the brain that aren't activated during conversation or everyday mental work.

The reader quoted another prominent yoga teacher, who explained that "yoga has a sly, clever way of short-circuiting the mental patterns that cause anxiety." The resulting pleasant daze has nothing to do with effects on one's intelligence.

Of course, that doesn't mean you won't occasionally say or do something silly after a good yoga workout! If you do, you can rest easy knowing that it's because your yoga routine is so relaxing.

Dahn Yoga Basics

Dahn Yoga basics on display in Friday Night Lights

It's hard to understand unless you live there, but football in Texas is simply a way of life. Fans and players a like eagerly await the beginning of each season, and each game can make or break the entire year. With such expectations, the players, some of whom are as young as 15, often have to overcome a great deal of pressure – a task which requires great mental toughness.

The 1990 book Friday Night Lights gives a firsthand account to the obstacles that the players have to overcome on a weekly basis, something which will provide readers with a great deal of inspiration in dealing with their own hurdles.

Written by famed journalist H. G. Bissinger, Friday Night Lights chronicles the 1988 season of the football team at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas. In addition to thrilling recaps of the team's most legendary games, Bissinger provides readers with striking personal stories about each of the team's best players, exploring their inner struggles in coping with the intense pressure they face on a day-to-day basis.

Perhaps most compelling of all is the story of James "Boobie" Miles. A star running back his junior season, Boobie gets injured before the start of his senior year and has to come to grips with no longer being the best on the team. The emotional transformation is truly gripping, and is more dramatic than any game covered in the book

Readers need not be football fans to appreciate the lessons that Friday Night Lights offers. Anybody who has had to overcome adversity will definitely be able to relate, and those looking for a bit of inspiration will find it.

Dahn Yoga practitioners can learn about loss, friendship in Toy Story 3

It almost goes without saying that friendship is one thing that almost everyone shares. Having that long-time companion who you can trust through thick and thin is certainly something that can make life more fulfilling. Many movies have explored the theme of friendship over the years, but few have done so quite as poignantly and emotionally as Toy Story 3. Not only is it a reflection on the loss of youth and the inevitability of growing up, but it demonstrates just how strong the bonds of friendship can truly be.

The third film in the popular animated series, Toy Story 3 follows the plight of the group of Toys as they cope with their owner, Andy, heading off to college. Woody, Buzz and the gang have certainly seen better days as Andy has played with them less and less over the years, but they are still loyal to him and most of all – each other.

With Andy beginning the next chapter of his life, the toys have to accept the fact they will be sent to a local day care to live out their remaining days. But, they soon come to realize they need to escape and with some determination and cooperation they try to find a way to stick together.

At face value, Toy Story 3 may seem like a light-hearted adventure following apparently useless piece of plastic, but viewers need dig only a little deeper to find out it's much more than that. This movie is a melancholy meditation on everything from love to loss to the inevitability of growing up. You may end up crying or laughing at the end, but one thing is for certain – you will walk away with a valuable lesson about the importance of friendship and companionship.

Everyone has to overcome obstacles in their lives, but few people have had to confront as much adversity as Mike Reeder. The ex-Marine, who served in Vietnam, lost both his legs after stepping on a landmine in 1970. Over the last 40 years he has worked tirelessly to overcome his disability and recently did something no other American wheelchair golfer has done – he played a round at the legendary Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland – providing inspiration for those who might need it.

Reeder first started playing wheelchair golf in 1988. Since then he has played in countless tournaments across the country, but only recently did he get the idea to play a round at one of the oldest courses in the world. To help him achieve his dream, he contacted the Challenged Athletes Foundation, an organization which helps individuals with disabilities live an active lifestyle. After hearing his story, the foundation awarded Reeder a grant to play the round – and ESPN cameras captured the whole thing.

"The Challenged Athletes Foundation is overjoyed to see Mike Reeder's dream of golfing the Old Course, St. Andrews Links fulfilled and to have been a part of making it a reality," said Virginia Tinley, Executive Director, CAF.

While few people have to overcome the obstacles Reeder has, his story can certainly inspire individuals to do great things. As Reeder demonstrates, if you set your mind to accomplishing a goal, whether it be that promotion at work or simply exercising on a regular basis, nothing can stop you from accomplishing it except yourself.

Let It Be offers Dahn Yoga practitioners a message of hope

At one time or another, everybody has felt like they too are unable to carry on. Whether it be caused by problems in one's family, at work, or simply the rigors of everyday life, everyone has bad days. However, as tough as it might seem, taking a step back and knowing that you'll be able to get through it can be a comfort that will help you make it passed the tough times and on to better days – a sentiment exemplified perfectly in The Beatles' classic tune Let It Be.

It's nothing too complicated or too over-the-the top, but it is regarded as one of the Fab Four's best songs for a reason. Paced by Paul McCartney's powerful vocals and soothing piano, Let It Be offers a meditation on how to handle times of struggle and sadness. At the crux of McCartney's heartfelt lyrics is that as long as you have something to believe in, whether it be yourself, religion or someone else, you'll be able to make it through even the darkest days.

"And when the night is cloudy/There is a light that shines on me/Shine until tomorrow, let it be," McCartney sings.

Let It Be is the perfect song for Dahn Yoga practitioners as its message seeks to calm listeners body and mind. Dahn Yoga seeks to encourage positive thoughts and self acceptance as well as quiet the mind, and by knowing that you'll be able to withstand even the most trying times, you'll be able to more thoroughly enjoy a relaxed existence.

The Dark Knight shows Dahn Yoga practitioners the challenges of moral uncertainty

The Dark Knight shows Dahn Yoga practitioners the challenges of moral uncertainty

Sometimes, being able to determine right from wrong is not as easy as it seems. There are often large swaths of gray that can cloud even the most principled person's judgement, and being able to come to a decision can require a great deal of introspection. Such is the plight of Batman in the 2008 thriller The Dark Knight, who faces a conundrum unlike any other he has faced before.

As usual, Gotham City is under duress. This time, the trouble is caused by the seemingly amoral Joker, who exhibits no reason for why he is creating the chaos that he does. As a counterweight to Batman's principled stance on crime, he is a new kind of adversary to the Caped Crusader. Over and over again, the Joker attempts to bait Batman into making difficult choices between revealing his identity, to having to choose between saving the love of his life or a distinguished public servant.

In the end, when the Joker threatens to cause even more death and destruction, Batman faces a tough moral quandary: should he compromise everything he stands for for the good of the people? Or would doing so make him as bad as the men he claims to despise.

Of course, Dahn Yoga practitioners will not be faced with such life and death decisions, but they will almost certainly have to wrestle with some tough choices. Whether it be difficult financial decisions or deciding on medical issues for loved ones who can't make the choice themselves, having a clear head and thinking issues through is a must, and being able to see things clearly is just one of the numerous Dahn Yoga benefits.

Dahn Yoga practitioners can learn about perspective from Planet of the Apes

Dahn Yoga practitioners can learn about perspective from Planet of the Apes

Sometimes it is hard to appreciate how good you have it until you've taken a walk in someone else's shoes. It can be startling to see the world from someone a different perspective, but more often than not you'll be better off because of it. The characters in the 1968 classic Planet of the Apes get a crash course in exactly what that's like when they find themselves in an strange world and a most unusual position.

Thousand of years in the future, an astronaut named Taylor (famously played by Charlton Heston) and his crew crash-land on what they believe to be a very distant planet. The desolate landscape soon gives way to a hyper-intelligent race of apes that capture Taylor, put him behind a cage, and treat him as a second-class citizen.

Despite all his best efforts to prove them otherwise, Taylor is unable to show that he posses intelligence rivaling the apes who have imprisoned him. Under threat of being lobotomized, Taylor and a fellow human are exiled to a distant corner of the planet where they will learn the true nature of the land they're on and their place in it among the apes.

Planet of the Apes was especially poignant when it was released, as it was at the height of civil unrest in the United States. As an allegory for racial oppression, the film made viewers wonder how they would react if the shoe was on the other foot. Though it has been more than 40 years since it was released, the message still rings true today, and viewers can learn a thing or two by stepping back and rethinking the way they treat others.

Finding Nemo will teach Dahn Yoga practitioners about the importance of family

As the old saying goes, you don't know know what you've got till it's gone, and this adage has been at the crux of many movies over the years. Few films make this more apparent than Finding Nemo. Dahn Yoga practitioners will surely appreciate the tale of a wayward young fish as he struggles with appreciating the love of his caring, albeit overprotective father.

Marlin had always been protective of his only son, Nemo after being the lone survivor of a brutal barracuda attack that the young fish's mother and all his siblings dead. Despite the fact Nemo hopes to be given more freedom to do as he pleases, he begrudingly puts up with his father's watchful eye. All that changes one day when Marlin overreacts and decides to pull his son from school. In an act of defiance, Nemo swims away and is captured by a fisherman, putting his life in jeopardy.

Separated from each other, Nemo realizes he needs his father and Marlin goes to great lengths to find his lost son. He eventually meets and teams up with a colorful cast of characters including the forgetful Dory and some helpful sea turtles, who help him to navigate the numerous dangers of the ocean.

As most people can attest, parents can sometimes be difficult to deal with, especially if they're overprotective like Marlin. But as Finding Nemo shows, once they're not there you will certainly miss their presence. Though it may not take being whisked away from your family to appreciate them, knowing that they always have your best interests in mind will certainly help.

The Lion King shows viewers how to reach their true potential through personal growth

Sometimes personal growth can be a difficult, and even painful, experience. It may take a serious event to change one's perception of the world around them, but more often than not, they come out better for it. Dahn Yoga practitioners can learn a lot by following the plight of Simba in the Lion King as he copes with personal tragedy only to recognize his true potential at the end of his journey.

Simba seems to have everything going for him. He's a young lion cub set to inherit the kingdom of Pride Rock from his majestic father, Mufasa, but things soon take a dramatic turn for the worse. Johnny Cash’s Man in Black an elegy for troubled times

Johnny Cash's Man in Black an elegy for troubled times

Johnny Cash's Man in Black an elegy for troubled times

Johnny Cash is well-known for his tunes about drinking and hard-living, but one of his songs breaks the mold and holds hope of a better tomorrow. Man in Black will appeal to the humanitarian side of Dahn Yoga practitioners who are looking to find personal change through helping others.

Cash, known for his ever-present dark attire during his rise to fame in the late 1960s, was often asked why he chose to dress in such a depressing shade. Rather than answering his fashion critics directly, he decided to turn to song, and gave listeners a lot to think about.

"Well we're doing mighty fine I do suppose/In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes/But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back/Up front there ought to be a man in black."

Cash's message is simple: individuals have to be concerned with much more than themselves. While that new gadget you just bought might make you happy, doing something for those less fortunate might make you even more so.
