Billy Madison showcases the power of perseverance

Although comedies tend to be big on laughs and small on emotional depth, certain titles offer both funny moments and heartwarming scenes that also teach a message. The Adam Sandler classic Billy Madison proves that if you set your mind to anything you can do it and achieve personal growth. Dahn Yoga practitioners will certainly appreciate the plight of Billy as he struggles to achieve life balance.

As the son of a wealthy hotel tycoon, Billy Madison grew up with everything handed to him – including his high school diploma – which he only received because his father paid teachers to give him decent grades. So, with his father stepping down, Billy has to go back to school, take all the tests, and re-graduate to take over the company before it is given to the evil-minded Eric in his stead.

The movie chronicles the struggles of Billy as he attempts to mature in order to take over the family business. While he begins the film an irresponsible playboy wiling away hours by the pool, by the end he is a fastidious studier with only thing on his mind – education.

Family of three lives with two cases of cancer

One family is faced with two kinds of cancer.

One family is faced with two kinds of cancer.

Among the aims of Dahn yoga techniques is to help people with personal healing and a well-rounded lifestyle. When a family of three has to live with two cases of simultaneous cancer, the key is a shared bond that allows for mutual healing and well-being, according to a recent New York Times report.

Nathan and Elisa Bond are the proud parents of a one-year-old daughter named Sadie. Nathan was diagnosed with Stage 3 rectal cancer nine days before Elisa was diagnosed with breast cancer.

There are no reliable statistics on how many couples in the U.S. face cancer simultaneously, but when the disease strikes a family such as the Bonds, their love and determination to beat the disease if truly admirable.
“She’s a great person to have cancer with, which sounds like a weird statement now that I say it out loud. She’s so strong and I admire the way she handles it, and it gives me the strength to handle it even better. I wouldn’t want to have cancer with anybody else but her," Nathan told the news source.

Researchers have studied the effect on cancer on people in relationships. In some cases, women with cancer were more likely to divorce or separate from their significant others. Some other studies have shown that people with cancer who are married have a higher likelihood of survival.

Each individual case is different, but the story of the Bond family is one of inspirational solidarity.

This can be a good degree for those who use video games to unwind

While some people turn to Dahn Yoga in an effort to relax, others choose a more creative route, such as video games, in an effort to take their minds off of things.

Quinnipiac University is looking to target those who use video games as a relaxation technique and has created a major in game design and development that will be offered through the department of visual and performing arts in the fall of 2011, according to the school's newspaper.

Professor of interactive digital design Greg Garvey said that the major will delve deeper into the subject in order to give students an idea of how games work. Additionally, he's looking toward the future of the gaming industry and what design skills will be important in the coming years.

"Triple-A titles for the game consoles will never go away, but there is huge growth in the marketplace," Garvey told the school newspaper. "What is on everyone's lips at the game developer's conferences is monetization and micro transactions."

Practicing Dahn Yoga is something anyone can do, whether they are 9 or 99 years old. The holistic mind-body system puts the brain at ease while bringing it into closer harmony with the physical frame. More and more, such yoga programs are catering to children and adolescents.

A center in Carrollwood, Florida, is offering a kid-oriented yoga program that focuses on both bodily health and mental well-being, according to Tampa Bay Online. Instructor Anna Weeks leads children through a number of exercises designed for fun and fitness.

She told the news source that the program involves a number of atypical activities, largely intended to convey the basics of yoga while stimulating the children's imaginations. These exercises include blowing cottonballs across the floor with straws and pretending to be trees or animals.

"They're so energetic and happy and excited to learn new things," Weeks told the source.

Those looking for methods of self healing may want to try helping others

Helping others can be fulfilling

Helping others can be fulfilling

When it comes to healing, many people turn to yoga meditation as a way to work on both their body and their mind. While programs such as Dahn Yoga can achieve this, some people may want to consider helping those around them find a sense of healing.

One way to help others is by enrolling in a nursing degree program, as the current healthcare system is facing a significant shortage. According to the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), it may be possible to get into the nursing profession by attending classes at a two-year school.

Members of the AACC suggest that these institutions will help answer the call of nursing shortages, as many people look for healthcare in their area.

"In a time of growing need, community colleges provide the most accessible and affordable route into the nursing profession," said Walter G. Bumphus, president of AACC. "The education our colleges provide is the backbone of competent, consistent and adequate healthcare for the nation."

Dahn Yoga can help nurses manage workload and stress, as well as holistically complement the medical treatment that some patients of their may receive.

Yoga comes to boot camp

Practicing Dahn Yoga is in large part about healing the self, the body and the mind. Unlike most other forms of physical actions, it does not rely on discharging the body's energy or otherwise exhausting it. In a similar way, the U.S. Army will soon rely on yoga to help troops relax and avoid injury, according to the Christian Science Monitor.

Though it has met with some with resistance, this branch of the U.S. Armed Forces has decided to incorporate a variety of new techniques into its physical fitness regimen. A senior Army official told the news source that these practices will include yoga and relaxation.

Why is the Army taking such a creative direction? Among other things, it is to avoid injuries.

“When you’re driving people until it hurts, that will result in injury. Not just in fixing people and mending bones, but in lost training time,” General Mark Hertling told the Monitor.

Studies have shown that strenuous training can lead to strains, sprains and stress fractures, all of which can cost troops valuable training time. Engaging in a little yoga may facilitate self healing and reduce the amount of aches and pains that new recruits go through.

For those looking for an undemanding yet energizing exercise routine, Dahn Yoga may provide just the right ratio of movement, meditation and relaxation.
