Development of internal chakra visualization

You can use the chakra chart as an external method of helping you to develop the capacity to visualize the chakra diagrams internally. The method is as follows Place the chart on the wall so the centre, about the area of the manipura chakra diagram, is approximately one meter above the ground. Sit in a comfortable pose so that your eyes are about an arm's length from the chart. You must practise trataka6. Gaze at the mooladhara chakra diagram without blinking the eyes for a few minutes. Then close the eyes and try to visualize the same diagram internally. On the following day repeat the same process with the swadhisthana chakra diagram. Repeat exactly the same process with each chakra in turn on successive days. On the eighth day you should be trying to visualize the sahasrara. If you have not been able to visualize the chakra diagrams, and this will more than likely be the case, spend another eight days trying to visualize each diagram in turn . . . one day's practice per diagram.

Kriya yoga is one of the most powerful methods of awakening ajna chakra if it is practised sincerely and regularly. In various specific techniques attention is directed to ajna chakra in the centre of the head. Location is not easy at first, though it becomes easier with practice and time. As preparation for kriya yoga, we suggest that you spend a few minutes every day trying to locate ajna chakra. Sit quietly and focus your attention at the centre of the head. Practices Vishuddhi Shuddhi

Shuddhi - 'the purification of the vishuddhi'. Let your breathing become slower and deeper. Then with inhalation, imagine that the breath is being drawn in through the vishuddhi kshetram at the front of the throat. Feel that the breath passes through the kshetram and eventually pierces vishuddhi chakra in the spine. With exhalation, feel the breath move forwards from vishuddhi chakra trigger point towards the kshetram and eventually outwards in front of the body. This is 1 round. Daily practice in this manner will gradually develop your sensitivity to vishuddhi chakra and kshetram.

It represents the level of awareness where one begins to see and realize the hidden essence behind all visible things. Location of chakra and kshetram

Like swadhisthana, manipura and anahata chakras, vishuddhi chakra also has a reflection on the front surface of the body called the vishuddhi kshetram. This is utilized in the practices of kriya yoga. The positions of the chakra and kshetram are as follows Vishuddhi kshetram is located on the front surface ofthe throat in the region ofthe Adam's apple and the thyroid gland. Vishuddhi chakra is located in the spine directly behind the kshetram. The kshetram can be easily located for it is pin-pointed by the bump or protrusion at the throat. The chakra is more difficult to locate. We suggest that you look in a mirror, place one finger on the Adam's apple and use a finger of the other hand to locate the region of the spine that is directly behind the Adam's apple. Eventually you should be able to feel the exact location with the eyes closed, but a little practice is required. This is the purpose of the following simple practice.

Of all the twenty types of yoga, including Kundalini Yoga, this is the highest kriya. This meditation cuts through all darkness. The chakras have been known in all parts of the world and throughout history by illumined and psychic people. They are not confined to one system, for they constitute the fundamental makeup of man. The ability to make and break habits is associated with the navel center or third chakra. When our navel center is strong we have the will to make decisions and to keep them. When we described vishuddhi chakra we pointed out that nectar or amrit trickles down from bindu to vishuddhi2. This amrit is bliss and the bindu is the abode of uninterrupted bliss. For example, the triangle pose (see the following figure) can help relieve lower back pain by releasing the lower chakras and allowing prana to flow through this area. Sometimes the power of two is greater than the power of one. If you have an interested partner, try meditating together, facing each other, legs crossed, knees touching, holding hands. Focus on each of the chakras one at a time (perhaps take turns naming each chakra, from the Saturn chakra all the way up to the Thousand Petaled Lotus chakra), or stay silent and meditate individually while connecting physically, emotionally, and energetically through the chakras (see the following illustration). The Third Center Energy Chakra

The third chakra, Manipura, is localized in your solar plexus. It is the seat of your power in the world. When this center is open and flowing, you are capable of translating your intentions and desires into manifestation. When it is blocked, you feel frustrated and ineffectual. with your attention will lead to their full expression. The Law of Intention and Desire governs the third chakra. It is important to be clear about your intentions so you are not surprised when they bear fruit. The process of manifesting your desires is first to bring them into consciousness, then expand your awareness through meditation, then release your intentions and detach from the outcome. You can control your actions, but you cannot control the fruit of your actions. Keep your life energy flowing freely through your third chakra and the light and heat of your intentions will radiate to the world. The mantra to clear and enliven the third chakra is Ram.

There are a large number of traditional characteristics associated with the chakras. On the accompanying two charts we have listed some of these characteristics, omitting those that are less relevant for the sake of clarity. Some of the characteristics have already been discussed. In recent years, great efforts have been made to relate chakras directly to physical organs in the body. Also, people have tried to identify the kundalini with specific nerve pathways. We feel that this is not very valid. The chakras function on a pranic level. They definitely have an influence on the physical body, but the chakras should not be associated and identified with specific physical organs as such. If you dissect the human body you will find no sign of the chakras. This does not mean that they don't exist, but that they are more subtle. It is only possible to see them through methods of modern science, such as Kirlian photography, or to experience them in states of supersensitivity. However, the focal point of the chakras can be assigned a definite location within the framework of the body. Don't make the mistake of thinking that the chakras are only awakened by a few specific forms of yoga. All paths of yoga are concerned with flowering the potential of the chakras some more directly than others. The more direct approach is the method of kundalini, kriya and laya yoga. With karma, bhakti, jnana yoga, etc. the approach is indirect no specific mention is made of the chakras in these systems. The chakras are the subtle energy centers of the body. Like pinwheels, the chakras spin at the speed of light, emanating the colors of the spectrum, each resonating with a particular frequency. Lalana chakra

The lalana chakra is a minor chakra that is closely associated with the vishuddhi chakra. It is located in the root of the palate at the back of the mouth. Chakra kshetram

In kriya yoga practices the trigger points of all the main chakras are utilized. These trigger points ascend from mooladhara to ajna chakra, following the contours of the spine between the swadhisthana and ajna chakras. The swa-dhisthana, manipura, anahata and vishuddhi chakras are also regarded as having physical counterparts on the front surface of the body. They lie directly in front of the corresponding chakras and on the same horizontal plane. Each of these frontal trigger points is called chakra kshetram. They can be regarded as reflections of the original chakra trigger points. The reflection of the swadhisthana chakra is called the swadhisthana kshetram. The same applies to the other three chakras - manipura, anahata and vishuddhi. These frontal centres or kshetrams are essential in kriya yoga techniques. It is necessary to be able to locate them. Manipura kshetram

In kriya yoga practices, the area of the body directly in front of the manipura chakra area on the front surface of the body is also used as a point of awareness. This is called the manipura kshetram and is exactly located at the navel. You should develop the ability to locate this region. Most people should find it quite easy to feel and locate the manipura kshetram with the eyes closed. MANIPURA CHAKRA LOCATION Two excellent methods of locating the mani-pura chakra trigger point and the manipura kshetram are called uddiyana bandha and manipurashuddhi These are practised as follows.

Vishuddhi Chakra

In the last four lessons we have described the following chakras 3. manipura 4. anahata4 The first two are generally associated with the attributes of tamas. The third and fourth chakras are associated with the qualities of rajas. In this topic we will introduce the first of the sattwic chakras, the vishuddhi chakra. The word sattwa means purity, understanding, peace and other qualities that lead to and are an expression of both inner harmony and harmonious interactions with other people and the outside world in general. Vishuddhi chakra is located in the throat region and comes immediately above the anahata chakra in the ascending order of the chakras.


The picture we have given of the sahasrara is an attempt to express the inexpressible. It is shoonya - the void perhaps it should be called shoonya-shoonya - the voidless void, the void of totality. It is Brahman. It is everything and nothing. Everything we say about it must be wrong, as we would be immediately limiting and categorizing it. Even if we say that it is infinite, we are wrong. It transcends all concepts, yet it is the source of all concepts. It is the merging of consciousness and prana. The sahasrara is the culmination of yoga. In fact, it is yoga itself. . . the perfect merging. The literal meaning of the word sahasrara is one thousand'. For this reason, it is said to be a lotus with one thousand petals. However, the word sahasrara, while literally meaning one thousand, implies that its magnitude and significance is vast. In fact, unlimited. Therefore, sahasrara should more aptly be described as a lotus with an infinite number of petals. It is both formless (nirakara)...

Ajna Chakra

The ajna chakra is the sixth and last of the chakras that we will discuss. It represents the highest of the psychic centres in man. Above this level are bindu and sahasrara, which are not chakras or psychic centres - they really come into the realm of the ineffable1. In the human framework there are said to be ten doors of perception. The first nine are the two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, mouth, anus and sexual organ. These are the gateways through which a person communicates with the outside world. The tenth door is ajna chakra, which leads 'upwards'. It is the tenth sense that leads directly to sahasrara, the source of all things. The first nine doors lead out to the material realms of being the tenth door, ajna chakra, leads into the more subtle realms. It is the gateway to the fountainhead of life.

Meet Your Chakras

Different traditions associate different things with each chakra which body parts, emotions, and thoughts each chakra governs which colors each chakra radiates which areas of our personality each chakra represents. We (the authors) like to refer to the chakras according to their associated planets, excepting the top two chakras, whose names are descriptive. Just about everybody who talks about chakras calls them something different. There are no pervasive Western names for the chakras people name them after colors, mantra syllables, the elements, and so on. The accompanying diagram indicates the physical locations of the trigger points of the chakras. Don't take these positions too literally, but rather take them as physical switches for the more subtle chakras. You should note that most of the chakras lie within the spine mooladhara is outside the bottom of the spine and ajna is at the top of the spine bindu, which is not strictly a chakra, is at the back of the head. We have shown sahasrara in the centre of the crown of the head. This is entirely symbolic. You should carefully note the exact locations and relate them to your own body. This is essential for the forthcoming practice of kriya yoga. Part 3 of this discussion can be found in the next lesson3.

Manipura Chakra

Manipura chakra is the third of the ascending chakras, mooladhara being the first and swadhisthana the second1. The manipura is a most important centre and is widely mentioned in traditional scriptures. In Buddhism, it is regarded as the seat of the kundalini, although in reality the kundalini can be regarded as residing in all chakras. Tantra yoga regards spiritual life, or expansion of awareness, as starting at the level of the mooladhara chakra, for it is here that man begins to become aware of himself, even if in a very rudimentary form. Therefore, the kundalini is said to reside at the mooladhara chakra level. Buddhism, on the other hand, regards expansion of awareness as beginning at the manipura chakra, the lower chakras being considered as instinctive levels of man, and therefore the kundalini is considered to reside at the manipura chakra. In this context, the abode of the kundalini is a matter of definition. The manipura chakra is indeed the centre of prana within the human...

Chakra Meditation

A different type of meditation involves intoning mantras aloud to create a healing resonance in the mind and body. There are mantras associated with each of the seven energy centers in the body, known as chakras. The chakras are major junction points between consciousness and the body, and each one is associated with a specific vibration. Envisioned by the ancient seers as wheels or vortices of life force, they sometimes have been associated with major neural networks or hormonal systems. Chakra Each center identifies a core human need. When the center is open, the energy that flows through the chakra allows you to meet those needs more effortlessly. If there is a blockage in one area of the body mind system, energy becomes stagnant and your intentions are more difficult to actualize. You can activate each center by putting your attention in the location of the chakra and sounding the associated mantra aloud.

The Balance of Life Part

Many people are very concerned with the chakras and practising techniques that unlock the potential that they represent. There is nothing wrong with this, but what is usually forgotten is that the awakening of these chakras is associated with balance of the ida and pingala. The ancient sages associated the chakras with the ida and pingala for a good reason, knowing that forceful attempts to awaken the chakras, without corresponding balance of the ida and pingala, could do more harm than good. Many people who have done too much sadhana without taking care to balance and harmonize inner and outer life have found this to be true at their own expense. They have either had bad experiences or have become very ill. So we emphasize have aspiration to unlock the potential of the chakras, but at the same time try to make sure the ida and pingala are balanced at all levels. Outofphase breath awareness

In most of the kriyas we have taught so far breathing is synchronized with awareness of the arohan and awarohan psychic passages. That is, with inhalation awareness ascends the frontal arohan passage and with exhalation awareness descends the spinal awarohan passage. The characteristic feature of chakra bhedan is that the breathing is not perfectly synchronized with the awareness of the two psychic pathways. Instead, the relationship is as follows Inhalation from swadhisthana downwards to mooladhara and then upwards in the frontal arohan passage to vishuddhi, passing through the intermediate kshetrams in turn. Exhalation upwards from vishuddhi to bindu and then downwards in the spinal awarohan passage to swadhisthana, passing through the intermediate chakras in turn. The breath is rotated through the two psychic pathways, but slightly out of phase.

So Hum Meditation to minutes

After clearing the subtle channels of circulation with your pranayama breathing exercises, you are ready to take your attention to a more expanded state of awareness through meditation. Close your eyes completely and simply become aware of your thoughts for a few moments, then sequentially bring your attention to each of the seven chakras, audibly intoning the mantra for each energy center.

Daily Practice Program

In this lesson we have introduced you to the anahata chakra. We suggest you practise it regularly in the manner described to locate the trigger point and the kshetram. Over the Last few lessons we have given techniques for locating the trigger point and kshetram of the mooladhara, swadhisthana and manipura chakras. If you can reasonably clearly locate these points, then we suggest you leave these techniques and practise chakra shuddhi. If you cannot locate these points clearly then continue with the the practices that we have already giv Start to practise ajapa stage 3 and try to feel the breath and mantra piercing the anahata and manipura kshetrams.

Opening the Heart Center

When Yogi Bhajan came to the West and Los Angeles in 1969, the strengthening and balancing of the navel point was one of the main focuses of his classes. His yogic message was that in order to get and stay in the heart center we first had to cultivate a powerful and stable base or the lower triangle. The lower triangle is the lower three chakras - root, sex and navel. The major theme of my first book Transitions of the Heart-Centered World (1988) is how to build the lower triangle as a base for moving into the heart chakra. It is interesting to look back and observe the different spiritual paths in the 70's and 80's. The message of the flower children of the 60's was All we need is love. Spiritual implications

We have already said that the ida and pingala are depicted diagramatically as crossing each other at the ascending chakras. This has a most important meaning for the spiritual aspirant. It means that as one opens up the potential of the mind there should always be a balance between inner awareness and action, inner knowledge and external expression in the world. If one of these aspects predominates then there is imbalance. This is why spiritual awakening should be slow and progressive, to allow one's actions to match one's level of inner understanding, one's expression and relationships in the outside world to match and balance the inner expansion. As one becomes more and more aware, so one's actions must be modified accordingly. In this sense, the chakras represent something like a stage of rest where one recuperates and balances action with understanding. Experience the Infinite

The main purpose of raising the Kundalini and moving our energy from the lower to the higher chakras is to give us an experience of the infinite. The goal is to expand our awareness so that we have a conscious experience of what is, was and always will be, often referred to as God. This awareness is awakened in the upper chakras by activating the pituitary and the pineal glands. The possibility of experiencing the infinite is always there in each one of us. It never goes away. We can resist this experience by being preoccupied with and attached to the thoughts in our minds.

When the central channel is thus activated, it also sets the seven psychoen-ergetic centers of the body in motion. These centers are the cakras (often spelled chakras in English), which are aligned along the central channel. The word means simply wheel and refers to the fact that these areas are whirlpools of energy that keep the physical body alive and functioning properly. In ascending order, the seven cakras are Muladhara ( root prop, pronounced moo-lahd-hah-rah) Located at the base of the spine between the rectum and genitals, this center is the resting place of the dormant serpent power, the great psychospiritual energy that Hatha Yoga seeks to awaken. Stage psychic centres awareness rotation

Now you have to develop awareness of the location of the principal chakras. You have to discover the psychic centres in your body. The second chakra is swadhisthana3. Be aware of the sensations at that point. The third chakra is manipura4. It is located in the spine at the same level as the navel. Then be aware of the anahata chakra5 located in the spine directly behind the centre of the chest. Now the vishuddhi chakra6, the fifth chakra. The sixth chakra is the ajna7. Lastly, be aware of the sahasrara located at the crown of the head9. Now repeat this process but in reverse that is, pass downwards in turn through the sahasrara, bindu, ajna, vishuddhi, anahata, manipura, swadhisthana and mooladhara. This is 1 complete round of chakra rotation. Start a second round mooladhara . . . swad-histhana manipura anahata vishuddhi . ajna bindu sahasrara sahasrara . . . bindu . ajna . . . vishuddhi anahata . . . manipura . . . swadhisthana . . . and finally, mooladhara.

Stage psychic centres visualization

Now you have to try to visualize the symbols of each chakra this is not easy, but try. If you wish you can use your own system of symbols or the symbols that we have previously described (2-9). Let us begin the practice. As each chakra is named, try to feel that point is being lightly pressed by someone's thumb, and try to visualize the symbol. The psychic symbol for mooladhara2 is a red four-petalled lotus. Then proceed to the swadhisthana chakra3. Then move to the manipura chakra4. lotus is actually growing from the manipura chakra. Proceed to the anahata chakra5 which is represented by a twelve-petalled blue lotus, in the centre of which there is a bright flame. Try to visualize the symbol while feeling the exact area in the body. Move on to the vishuddhi chakra6 which is Visualize this picture at the vishuddhi chakra location. Then proceed to the ajna chakra7 which is symbolized by a two-petalled silver lotus on one petal is a full moon and on the other a glowing sun in the centre...

Identity in the Lower Triangle

It is in the lower triangle that we achieve a sense of our own identity. The first three chakras are where we experience our individuality. It is in our uniqueness that we identify not only who we are, but also what we want and how to accomplish our goals. It is the FIRST CHAKRA and our connection with the Earth that gives us the power to manifest, to bring into being our desires, and to achieve results. The SECOND CHAKRA gives us the power to create. The THIRD CHAKRA gives us the energy to take action. The navel center is the easiest chakra to monitor. You know your navel center is set, when you feel a pulse at or around the rim of the umbilicus. You can also monitor this pulse at the don tien or navel center 2-3 inches below the navel and in the line between these two points. Although you can check the pulse sitting or standing up, the easiest position is lying down. The best times are before and after the navel exercises.

The Awakening Process

(3) Alignment has both and active and a passive component. The active component involves applying the locks or performing subtle internal movements in the chakras and along the spine. The passive component happens naturally when the blocks in the body have been released. The physical and energy bodies automatically align when the resistance to the natural state and flow is gone.

Feel the sound of the AAAAAA come from the heart. Experience your throat as the mouthpiece of your heart. This practice will help you locate, consolidate and open up the fourth (heart) and the fifth (throat) chakras. SAT NAM is the call of the soul. As you chant call out to your soul, sing to your soul. Singing to your soul creates a very peaceful feeling. It takes us out of duality for a moment as our personality and soul merge as one in the sound current of our infinite being. Feel free to express any emotions that come up. This is a good way to release and balance the emotions. The emotional energy will gently merge into soul energy.

Practice Abhyasa

(iv) yoga The source of the breath is the same as that of the mind therefore the subsidence of either leads effortlessly to that of the other. The practice of stilling the mind through breath control (pranayama) is called yoga. Fixing their minds on psychic centres such as the sahasrara (lit. the thousand-petalled lotus) yogis remain any length of time without awareness of their bodies. As long as this state continues they appear to be immersed in some kind of joy. But when the mind which has become tranquil emerges (becomes active again) it resumes its worldly thoughts. It is therefore necessary to train it with the help of practices like dhyana, whenever it becomes externalised. It will then attain a state in which there is neither subsidence nor emergence. The heart on the right side of the chest is generally indicated. This is because we usually point to the right side of the chest when we refer to ourselves. Pranamasana Salutation Pose

Begin with your feet firmly planted on the ground in the salutation pose, inhaling and exhaling easily. Allow your attention to go inside and become aware of the current level of energy in your body. The mantra for the salutation pose acknowledges the unconditional life-giving power of the sun. This pose resonates with the heart chakra and the Law of Giving and Receiving.

Breathing and psychic passages

You should practise ujjayi pranayama throughout the practice. Inhalation is done in the psychic passage connecting the manipura to the vishuddhi chakra trigger point via the centre of the spine. Retain the breath for a few seconds at vishuddhi. Exhalation is done in the psychic passage passing from vishuddhi via the spine to ajna, then directly back to bindu and then to sahasrara at the crown of the head. The breath should be synchronized with the flow of prana or amrit through the psychic passages. Breathing should be as slow and as comfortably as possible.

Moola Bandha Root Lock

The root chakra is the source of all energy in the body. Learning to regulate prana in this region will enable you to consciously direct your creative forces to the achievement of all your desires. Performing this bandha can help with a wide range of health conditions including hemorrhoids, urinary incontinence, and sexual function problems.

Pranayama Practice

Uddiyana bandha, like all the bandhas, is associated with control of prana. It acts directly on the navel area (manipura chakra) which is the centre or storehouse of prana. It is therefore a very important technique. Stimulation of the navel area can lead to redistribution of prana throughout the entire body, and can lead directly to tranquillity and clarity of mind. It renders the mind in a fit state for meditative techniques and the spontaneous occurrence of meditation. Combined with pranayama, it becomes an especially powerful practice.

Mastery of preparatory techniques

Before beginning kriya yoga you should have developed a reasonable degree of sensitivity to those parts of the body utilized in kriya yoga techniques. In particular, you should be able to mentally and physically feel and locate the chakra and kshetram trigger points associated with mooladhara, swadhisthana, etc. During the last six lessons we have described specific techniques for developing sensitivity to these centres2. You should be able to locate these centres at will, without excessive effort. Before attempting to practise kriya yoga, you should be familiar with the meditative technique of ajapa japa3. We do not advise you to begin kriya yoga until you have practised all these techniques for a reasonable period of time, preferably six months should have been given over to these preparatory practices.

This Force is in a dormant state and is sleeping a sleep-trance in almost all persons in the basal Muladhara Chakra. When this sleeping Force is roused to action, it pierces through the various centres of spiritual energy in the human body and reaches the crown of the head or the Sahasrara Chakra where She is united with Her Consort, Lord Siva. That Yogi who has taken the sleeping Kundalini to the Sahasrara Chakra and united Her with Lord Siva alone has attained the Goal, not others. The process by which this sleeping Power can be roused to action and taken to the top of the head has also been described with beautiful illustrations. The Yogi who has succeeded in achieving this union becomes the Lord of all powers and knowledge.

Subsidiary techniques

You should be fully familiar with ujjayi pranayama in order to practise vipareeta karani mudra7. You should also have developed sensitivity to the manipura, vishuddhi and ajna trigger points, preferably having done the associated techniques8. In the practice you will have to locate the bindu trigger point at the back of the head9, and you will also have to direct your attention to the sahasrara trigger point. This is symbolically found at the centre of the crown of the head and is quite easy to locate mentally10.

There seem to be paths both which lead to one path The Path of Yoga

The idea is that with breath regulation, combined with a focus on certain nerves in the spine, gradually there will come a profound stillness leading to deeper states of awareness of the unconscious mind. This process is said to have its physiological equivalent of a bio-energy (prana) withdrawing from the outer nerves to the central nerve of the spine, the yogis call sushumna, and entering at its base rising through the spinal cord, uniting the individual soul with higher planes of consciousness, until the highest state in the thousand petalled lotus or Sahasrara in the brain is reached, and the soul experiences the Light of a million suns. The yogis say this is Liberation.

The Manifestation Mantra and Meditation

The basis for the Ah Meditation is that creation takes place in two centers. One is the sex center, the sex chakra (located by the reproductive organs), from which the energy is released to create a baby. Creating a baby is a mystery, a joyous act. You can also create through the third eye chakra, which is between the two eyebrows and the pituitary gland. Everyone has an option to create either through the sex chakra or through the third eye chakra. Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimottanasana

Due to the half lotus pose, the knees become flexible enough to execute the full lotus pose. While placing the chin on the knee of the extended leg, the bent knee is brought close to the stretched leg. This gives a good pull to the navel and abdominal organs. Blood is made to flow round the navel and the genital organs. The navel is considered to be a nerve centre, and the Svadhisthana Chakra, one of the purificatory fly-wheels in the human nervous system, is situated there. This chakra corresponds to the hypo-gastric plexus. The pose is recommended for persons with rounded and drooping shoulders-.

Mula Bandha Pelvic Floor Root Lock

Mula bandha is one of these special locks. It is a lock applied to the area of the internal perineum, which is located between the genitals and the anal sphincter. Mula bandha is also sometimes referred to as Root Lock because this corresponds to the area where the first, or root, chakra is believed to lie within the energy system of yoga. The Root Lock is believed to seal in the energy at the base of the spine where the powerful kundalini energy lies coiled. Mula bandha is also sometimes referred to as Anal Lock because it involves the contraction of the anal sphincter muscles as well as the surrounding muscles in the pelvic floor.

Arohan and awarohan psychic passages

Bindu Chakra

Arohan is the ascending psychic passage which starts from the mooladhara chakra, travels forwards to the swadhisthana kshetram in the pubic area, then follows the curve of the belly to the manipura kshetram, upwards to the anahata kshetram and vishuddhi kshetram in the front of the throat, then in a straight line to bindu at the back of the head. Awarohan is the descending passage which starts at bindu, travels forwards to the ajna chakra, then down through the sushumna in the spine, passing through all the chakra trigger points in turn, to terminate at mooladhara. You should fully familiarize yourself with the exact route and location of the arohan and awarohan passages and try to develop sensitivity to them. They are an integral part of chakra anusandhana and a number of subsequent kriyas. One of the aims of kriya yoga is to balance the prana that flows through them.

Psychic passage rotation

As you rotate your awareness through these psychic pathways try to feel that each chakra and kshetram is being pierced in turn by a powerful flow of prana. If you wish you can imagine that each of the centres is like a bead and that together they form a chakra-kshetram mala. Imagine that each bead is being pierced and threaded by a sharp needle of prana. This penetration should be more ofa feeling than a thought. Try not to bring in intellectual speculation.

The emergence of the True Man and True Woman

These locks, called Bhandas, are located (i) the root lock giving the awakening of fearlessness to the consciousness, situated at the juncture of the pulling of the anus, sex organs and navel, called the Kandal or Nabhi Chakra, (ii) the diaphragm lock, where the diaphragm is pulled, (iii) the neck lock, where the chin is pulled in and neck pulled back, and (iv) 2 other locks in the brain.

The right and left hand path of tantra

The stage in spiritual life where one is ready to awaken the inner awareness of the mind to a greater extent. Here the ida is given more emphasis, but one still follows the pingala path, the path of action. One starts to make greater progress in expanding inner awareness (ida) but while simultaneously balancing this with karma yoga (pingala). The left hand path of tantra consists of three acharas or stages and are generally associated with a guru-disciple relationship. It is this vama marga that leads eventually to higher understanding and realization of one's fullest potential. It is this path that eventually leads to that which is beyond both the ida and pingala - the sushumna flow to sahasrara.

Alternative route of the arohan psychic passage

There is also another pathway for the arohan psychic passage that has been taught by tradition throughout the ages. On the ascent, the awareness is taken from vishuddhi kshe-tram to the lalana chakra in the palate, then to the nose tip, then to bhrumadhya14, then follows the curvature of the skull through sahasrara at the crown to bindu at the back of the head. This method is perfectly valid and also follows a natural flow or circuit of subtle prana. If you already practise kriya yoga and use this psychic passage in your kriyas then you should continue to do so. If you are now learning kriya yoga through this book then you can experiment with both passages and find the one you like the best. However, in this course we will generally refer to the arohan passage as connecting the vishuddhi kshetram 8 Manipura - Book II, Lesson 21, Topic 3 Vishuddhi - Book II, Lesson 23, Topic 3 Ajna -Book II, Lesson 24, Topic 2

Rationale of Amrit

Amrit pan can be described as an upright form of vipareeta karani mudra'. Concerning vipareeta karani mudra, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika says The secretion of the moon (bindu) is called amrit. It is normally consumed by the fire of the sun (manipura chakra). It (lows downwards and leads to ageing of the body. There is a wonderful technique which can reverse this process (called vipareeta karani mudra). (3 77-78) Both vipareeta karani mudra and amrit pan are concerned with reversing this process by redirecting the nectar upwards from manipura towards bindu via the lalana chakra. The same psychic pathway is utilized in both kriyas In vipareeta karani mudra, however, the body is inverted, while in amrit pan it remains upright.

Kundalini Fact and Fiction

*Cakra In Yogic parlance Cakra signifies a centre of psychic force, to be existing on the cerebro-spinal axis, beginning from Muladhara root-support centre, at the base of the spine. The number of Cakras, as now generally held, is six through which Kundalini rises on its ascent to Sahasrara in the crown of the head. In the ancient texts these centres are depicted being circular in formation.

Nyasa traditional yoga nidra

All these methods of nyasa are very powerful. They can be either external (bahir) where the parts of the body are physically touched, or they can be internal (antar) where the mantras and awareness are mentally placed. A vast selection of mantras is utilized, includingTam, Phut, Hrim, Krim, the Gayatri mantra and so forth. The bija (seed) mantras of the chakras can also be utilized - Lam, Vam, Ram, etc. - and rotated throughout the six chakras. The mantra chanting and rotation of awareness harmonizes the nervous system, balances pranic flows and renders the mind one-pointed. Each part of the body is systematically charged with the energy of the mantras. The whole body and mind are purified and prepared for meditation.

The different levels of nada

This is the point of origin of nada. It is the nada that is heard in states of super consciousness. It is way beyond normal levels of perception. It is nada that has such a high rate of vibration that it is beyond the classification of vibration. It is silent sound. It is associated with the state of samadhi. It is called the anahata nada - the unstruck sound and is beyond all conceptualization.

Moola bandha contracts the muscles of the pelvic floor lifting and toning the organs of the pelvis including the bladder and genitalia. The pelvic floor muscles are recruited and awakened by contracting associated muscles such as the iliopsoas. This focuses the mind on the first chakra. Jalandhara bandha contracts the anterior neck muscles, flexing the neck and drawing the chin to the sternum. This focuses the mind on the fifth chakra. Udyana bandha contracts the upper abdominals in the region approximately two inches below the solar plexus and focuses the mind on the third chakra.

Bindu and nada yoga sadhana

According to ancient Indian philosophy, consciousness expresses itself through nada (subtle vibration). Three concepts are worth mentioning kala, bindu and nada. Kala is the individuating principle mentioned under the heading 'Evolutionary Implications'. Bindu is the point through which consciousness expresses itself in the created universe. Nada is the flow of consciousness from the infinite through the bindu to the object of creation. This process can be compared to a funnel bindu and kala bring the consciousness into a concentrated flow and nada is the medium through which consciousness flows along the restricted orifice. When the nada moves upwards, then creation takes place. This is denoted by the pravritti marga and is called manifestation or material evolution. Nada is regarded as the link between pure consciousness and all created objects. This nada can also be utilized to proceed in the opposite direction - the nivritti marga. The water is poured clockwise over Shri Mataji's Feet as the devotee rubs the photo clockwise with the thumb and fingers of either the right hand alone with the left hand supporting the right forearm, or both hands. The water becomes vibrated and is good for plants or can be put on the earth or in a river, but not normally consumed if it has been touched*. After washing Shri Mataji's Feet, the wet hands can be applied to the Sahasrara and Agnya Chakras. After a few minutes meditation with the Attention on taking in Shri Mataji's vibrations through the Sahasrara, the Prasad can be distributed, first offering some of each kind to Shri Mataji on a small plate. Psychic passage awareness and mental repetition

As in kriya number 3 you will be require d to rotate your awareness through the arohan and awarohan psychic pathways. You should mentally repeat the name of each chakra and kshetram in turn as your awareness passes through them. The process is as follows When your awareness reaches mooladhara you should mentally repeat three times 'mooladhara mooladhara . mooladhara'. Then mentally say the word 'arohan', immediately before ascending the arohan psychic passage. Ascend the arohan passage as you breathe in. Feel each kshetram in turn and mentally repeat their names once 'swadhisthana, manipura, anahata, vishuddhi, ajna'. Say the word 'awarohan' once immediately before descending the awarohan passage. Descend the awarohan as you exhale. Feel each chakra in turn and mentally repeat their names once 'ajna, vishuddhi, anahata, mani-pura, swadhisthana'.

The psychic symbol in kriya yoga

More gross focal points of attention such as chakra trigger points, breathing and so forth. In the later kriyas, to be introduced towards the end of this course, awareness is fixed on more subtle inner focal points represented by symbols of the chakras. Then, in the final stages, one fixes awareness on the lingam. You do not have to choose any symbol the final symbol arises spontaneously as an integral part of the structure of kriya yoga. This final symbol, the lingam, leads directly to dhyana.

Pronunciation of Soham

You should hear the sound Ham as you breathe out and down the spinal awarohan psychic passage from bindu to mooladhara. From bindu through ajna to vishuddhi, the emphasis will be on the sound h-a-a-a. From vishuddhi to mooladhara the emphasis should be on the sound m-m-m. This will be a humming sound that vibrates down the spine.
