The karate kid

1. Stand in the mountain posture (discussed in Chapter 7) and raise your arms out to the sides parallel to the line of your shoulders (and the floor) so that your shoulders form a T with your torso as you inhale.

2. Steady yourself and focus on a spot on the floor 10 to 12 feet in front of you.

3. As you exhale, bend and raise your left knee toward your chest, keeping your right leg straight as shown in Figure 14-10, and hold for 6 to 8 breaths.

4. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 with your legs reversed.

After you become stable in the karate kid posture, try extending your bent left leg forward and up. Gradually work towards fully extending your left leg parallel to the floor — take your time! Try this added step on both sides.
