Disconnection from our Souls

We are obliged to experience grief, sorrow, pessimism and loneliness. The trick is that we are not obliged to indulge in these feelings. They are there to teach us. But they are not there to torment us. The key to understanding all these feelings is the realization that they are a reflection of our separation from Source. They are a response to a closed heart. They are generated by a lack of self-love and a fundamental misunderstanding of who we really are. To understand our divine nature we must have the experience of our own soul. We will not love ourselves simply by having someone tell us we are beautiful and great. We have all witnessed how transitory the elation from even honest complements are. For the remedy cannot come from outside ourselves. The remedy is found within our own hearts.

Chapter Pratyahara Or Abstraction

Minor obstacles, of which at least five may be named as the chief ones. One of them is pain (Duhkha) which takes possession of the seeker. There is a sense of internal grief annoying him constantly. 'Where am I, and what am I doing', is his silent sorrow. It is all darkness and there is no light visible in the horizon. This brings in an emotional depression (Daurmanasya) and one becomes melancholy. One sees no good in anything and no meaning or value in life. Life loses its purpose and it is all a wild-goose chase. This becomes the conclusion after so much of effort in the practice of Yoga. This is the point at which the seeker reaches at times, a condition well described in the first chapter of the Bhagavadgita. 'It is all hopeless' seems to be the cry of Arjuna. This is also the cry of every Arjuna in the world, of every man, every woman and everyone who rotates through the wheel of life. Psychophysical Imbalances

Thought exerts its influence over the body. Grief in the mind weakens the body. Body influences the mind also in its turn. A healthy body makes the mind healthy. If the body is sick, the mind also becomes sick. If the body is strong and healthy, the mind also becomes healthy and strong.

When this bodily control is achieved, there comes freedom from the onslaught of what are called the 'pairs of opposites', such as heat and cold, hunger and thirst, joy and grief, and so on. Daksa once celebrated a great sacrifice, but he did not invite his daughter Sati nor her husband Siva, the chief of the gods. Sati, however, went to the sacrifice, but being greatly humiliated and insulted threw herself into the fire and perished. When Siva heard this he was gravely provoked, tore a hair from his matted locks and threw it to the ground. A powerful hero named Virabhadra rose up and awaited his orders. He was told to lead Siva's army against Daksa and destroy his sacrifice. Virabhadra and his army appeared in the midst of Daksa's assembly like a hurricane and destroyed the sacrifice, routed the other gods and priests and beheaded Daksa. The mind is to be brought to its source. Unfortunately, we cannot know where the mind is unless it starts working, like the thief whose presence is known from his activities. The outer problems are manifestations of the inner fivefold complexity. Ignorance is the first cause. But it is a negative cause when one is merely ignorant or stupid. Man does not stop with this acceptance. He wants to demonstrate his ignorance, and here is the root of all trouble. Affirmation of egoism is the first demonstration. When one wants others to yield to the demands of one's ego which goes counter to the egos of others, there is clash of personalities and interests, and this circumstance breeds unhappiness in family, in society, and in the world. If the horses are very strong, and do not obey the reins, if the charioteer, the intellect, does not know how to control the horses, then this chariot will come to grief. But if the organs, the horses, are well controlled, and if the reins, the mind, are well held in the hands of the charioteer, the intellect, the chariot, reaches the goal. Try not to feel guilty about past events. Many people are continually overwhelmed by feelings of regret and guilt for past actions and experiences. Forget the past - it is finished. Live in the present. That which has happened is finished, so why worry about it Use it only as a reference. Shakespeare with such simplicity vet depth of understanding summed up this attitude when he said What's gone and what's past, should be past grief. This also applies to mistreatment that you have received. If you feel continual resentment, then this is a disturbing factor which makes your life unhappy and tension-ridden. Try to drop this resentment - let bygones be bygones. If you don't, then it will continue to disrupt your life and the lives of those around you. Although this may seem easier said than done, at least consider dropping these grudges. Lord Krishna says to Arjuna The food which is dear to each is threefold. Hear the distinctions of these. The foods which increase vitality, energy, vigour, health and joy and which are delicious, bland, substantial and agreeable are dear to the pure. The passionate desire foods that are bitter, sour, saline, excessively hot, pungent, dry and burning and which produce pain, grief and disease. The food which is stale, tasteless, putrid and rotten, leavings and impure is dear to the Tamasic. (Bhagavad-Gita. Ch. VII-8, 9, 10).

White Willow

Writings of the 19th and 20th centuries, the willow is often associated with grief and sadness. The only basis for this interpretation is the biblical Psalm 137 where it is said that the exiled Hebrews, when they had given up all hope, hung their harps from the branches of 'willow' trees by the 'waters of Babylon'. Thinking of this, Christian botanists named a species of willow they had imported from Asia 'weeping willow' (Salix babylonica) because of its hanging branches.
