The surface on which you do the headstand is not very important if yoi stay in the posture for less than five minutes, but if you are going to holi it for a longer time, the softer the surface the better so long as your fore arms do not spring this way and that when you are trying to adjust. A 2 inch thickness of high-density foam rubber is so springy that it is hard t keep your balance, but a heavy woolen blanket folded three times (eigl thicknesses) or a l-inch thickness of high-density foam is fine. Mattress are nearly always too springy. If you use a futon make sure that you pla< your head in a region that is flat. You will certainly create problems fi yourself if you place your head on an irregular surface that always favo one side.
