Locations of Structures on the Body

The following terms are used to describe where structures lie in relation to certain landmarks on the body.

Medial:

Lateral:

Closer to the midline of the body

Away from the midline

Proximal:

Distal:

Closer to the trunk or midline

Away from the trunk or midline

Superior:

Inferior:

Above or towards the head

Below or away from the head

Anterior:

Posterior:

Towards the front of the body

Towards the back of the body

Ventral:

Dorsal:

On the front of the body

On the back of the body

Superficial:

Deep:

Towards the skin

Inside the body
