Niyamas are observances or personal disciplines. Again, there are five: shauca (pronounced SAH-chah) means "purity, or inner and outer cleanliness"; santosha (san-TOH-shah) means "contentment"; tapas (TAH-pahs) means "self-discipline"; svadhyaya (svahd-YAH-yah) means "self-study"; and ishvara-pranidhana (iSH-var-ah PRAH-nee-DAH-nah) means "centering on the divine."
