Background and Training of Practitioners

Certification in Kripalu Yoga is provided through a training program offered at the Kripalu Center in Lenox, Massachusetts. Training programs are offered regularly throughout the year. The Basic Certification program requires intensive residential training. This training can be accomplished either in one full month of training or in a series of three nine-day residential training sessions spaced over a period of about six months. The Basic Certification program prepares individuals to teach Stage One postures. It teaches a detailed understanding of the asanas and pranayama (yogic breathing practices), including benefits and contraindications; anatomy and physiology as it relates to yoga practice; relaxation and meditation methodology; and the history and principles of yoga philosophy. Students practice teaching under supervision. Additional levels of training provide instruction in Stages Two and Three of Kripalu Yoga. It is recommended that candidates for Basic Certification training have at least six months' experience in daily practice of Kripalu Yoga. More than 5,000 teachers of Kripalu Yoga have been certified and are practicing throughout the world today.
